HSDB Accomplishments
National accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
Met Superintendent Kishimoto’s three key Implementation Strategies: School Design, Student Voice, and Teacher Collaboration
Increased enrollment from 45 to 65 students in 3 years – a 45% increase, and growing.
Increased dormitory enrollment by 100%
Convinced Hawai’I DOE (HDO) to allow Oahu students to reside in the dorms.
Convinced HDO to create an entry level position in the dormitory to allow Deaf people to qualify for Houseparent positions without the one-year of residential experience requirement.
Emphasized ASL/English Bilingual-Bicultural education, where all students are expected to be fluent in both ASL and English.
Included Hawai’ian culture course for students.
Expanded ASL program to include ASL Department and three ASL Specialists.
Three-times yearly ASL assessments of all students including ASL instructions and support.
Required that all job postings include announcement that ASL skills are preferred/required.
Increased high school students reading skills using Lexile levels. SY2018-19 saw average lexile growth of 98L (HS) and 82L (MS) -both exceeding national average growth of 70L.
For SY 2018-19, MAP reading scores increased for 60% of ES students, 73% of MS students, and 67% of HS students.
Created evening tutoring program for residential students.
Created after-school activities program.
Insisted that HSDB endeavor to give all students a high school diploma and not a certificate of attendance. Almost all high school students now have a 4-6 year graduation plan to insure they graduate with a diploma.
Created Career and Work-Based Education Program to provide HS students with intensive work experiences and insure they graduate with a diploma.
All seniors graduated or continued with their education at KCC, Gallaudet University, or HSDB.
Two robotic teams and a new LEGO team for SY 2019-20.
Computer Science/Robotic classroom
Coding classes for elementary and middle school students.
Computer science class for high school students.
All students have either an iPad or Mac computer.
STEM program with STEMscopes.
Media/TV production class and studio for SY 2019-20.
HS students attending KCC.
Partnership with Kalani HS for basketball, volleyball, and football.
Curriculum 90% completed.
ASL instructions for parents on campus, off-campus, and on-line.
Provided teachers with an extra 40 minutes per day of collaboration time.
Gave all teachers same prep time to allow for greater collaboration among teachers.
HSDB almost fully staffed for SY 2019-20 including several home-grown teachers.
